About the member of the National Council

Dejan Crnek assumed his mandate as a member of the National Council as deputy mayor for the City of Ljubljana. He has been deputy mayor since 2014 and is responsible in the fields of local self-government, protection, rescuing and civil protection, city traffic inspection, the inspectorate, sports as well as health and social care. Within the Municipal Council, he is a member of the Commission for Awards and the Committee for Sports.

Born in Ljubljana, he concluded his education at Vič Elementary School and Vič High School and continued his academic path at the Faculty of Sports in Ljubljana. Later, he obtained additional education in the field of sports management at the Faculty for Entrepreneurship – Gea College. During the last years of his studies, he put this knowledge into practice at Dravlje Elementary School and the Secondary School for Timber in Ljubljana, where he worked as a teacher of physical education for five years. Afterwards, he embarked on an independent entrepreneurial path.

Throughout his education, he was active in various fields as a sports enthusiast and an organiser with an exceptional instinct for working with the youth. When he was as young as 15, he became a guide at the oldest sports association in Slovenia “Narodni dom” and later managed guided groups during summer and winter field trips in nature. With successful work and a great measure of responsibility, he soon became the president of the Sports Association “Narodni dom”, president of the “Sokol” Association of Slovenia, vice-president of the Gymnastics Association of Slovenia, and vice-president of the Sports Association of Ljubljana. Simultaneously, he took over the work of the president of the supervisory board of the Olympic Committee of Slovenia and later of an executive board member.

An inclination towards working with people, inter-connection, and cooperation are qualities which contributed to his appointment as president of the parent council and the school committee at Šmartno pod Šmartno goro Elementary School, as well as president of the parent council and member of the school committee at Šiška High School. Due to his desire for continual progress in pursuing sustainable development and fulfilment of increasingly ambitious goals, he was at local elections entrusted with three mandates (from 2002 until 2014) as president of the Šmartna gora District Council, where he focused especially on underdeveloped infrastructure, renewed lightning on some streets and roads, renewed multiple smaller streets, and prepared the conditions for the construction of sidewalks. The Šmartna gora District Council also prepared numerous measures to scale down traffic, ensure regular bus connections between Gameljne, Šmartno, Tacen and Ljubljana, and built an additional bus station in Gameljne. Due to the need for communal spaces within the community, the District Council developed a first concept for the Šmarna gora Centre which will be constructed using a system of public and private partnership and will include a day centre, library, market, post office, youth centre, and much more.

When he first became deputy mayor for the City of Ljubljana in 2014, he already had knowledge of the functioning of city administration, especially in the field of local self-government, safety, and sports. As a city councillor, he decides and actively participates in the set-up of foundational strategic goals, as well as contributes to the creation of both the city centre and surrounding areas of Ljubljana with numerous successfully executed projects. His active participation in the annual European Mobility Week and the project “Ljubljana – the Green Capital of Europe 2016” is a contribution to the conscious implementation of a new traffic policy which is based on encouraging alternative modes of mobility.

Since 2015, he has been a member of the Policy advisory committee (PAC) for the CIVITAS initiative, and in September 2018 he accepted a two-year chairmanship of this committee at the CITIVAS Forum; as part of which he has a key role as a connecting element between multiple cities and the European Commission for the field of sustainable mobility in urban spaces. Moreover, in 2016 he was elected to the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia as a representative of local interests. As part of his five-year term, he has since functioned as a member of the Interest Group of Local Interests, the Commission for Culture, Science, Education and Sports, and the Commission for Local Self-Government and Regional Development.

His exceptional interest in not only the environment and other people but also in participation in various sports disciplines, activities and implementation of sports programmes of associations, clubs and federations led him to become the president of the Sports Union of Slovenia – the largest organisation for sports for all in Slovenia – in 2016. In this way, his programme contributes to the re-establishment of values which were built in 1863 through sports and are again welcome in today’s world.

It is his pleasure and honour to be a part of the team of a large city family. With his commitment and positive attitude, which in his professional path he invests into realising set goals, he has been a significant contributor to the community.
