Matjaž Švagan was elected to the National Council as a representative of local interests (21. electoral unit - Trbovlje).
In the National Council, he is:
- vice-president of the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia,
- member of the Interest Group of Local Interests,
- member of the Commission for Social Care, Labour, Health and the Disabled,
- member of the Commission for Local Self-Government and Regional Development.
About the member of the National Council
Matjaž Švagan was elected president of the Assembly of the Municipality of Zagorje ob Savi in 1992 and was elected mayor of the Municipality of Zagorje ob Savi at direct elections in 1994. In 2010, he founded the political party Zagorje gre naprej - Združenje za napredek Zasavja (Zagorje moving forward – Association for the progress of Zasavje), operating at the municipal level. Today, he is serving his sixth mandate as mayor of the Municipality of Zagorje ob Savi. For two terms, from 2000 until 2004 and from 2004 until 2008, he served as a deputy of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia. Since 2017, he has served as president of the Council of the Regional Development Agency Zasavje.
